Kimberly Ormiston is a 28-year-old, single mother of four elementary aged students. Like many people, Kim fell on hard times and at the age of 14 she was all on her own. After overcoming domestic abuse, drug addiction and homelessness she found herself living and working in a homeless shelter with her four children. While there, she successfully completed her GED at the Sumter Adult Education Center in just one year. Through all of this, Kim focused on bettering her and her family’s future by making an impact in her local community, raising her four kids and obtaining her GED. After completing the GED program, Kim enrolled at Lake-Sumter State College where she is pursuing her AS degree in Nursing. In an effort to still support her family, while getting a higher education, Kim obtained full-time employment at the State College where she is a student. Kim has been steadfast and undeterred in meeting her personal and educational goals, while providing for her family. Kim’s advice to others is that “every dream begins with a decision to try – never stop trying.”
